SECONDARY ALTERNATOR AND LITHIUM BATTERY BANK

SECONDARY ALTERNATOR AND LITHIUM BATTERY BANK

Dear forum, I am getting an excess 14 and would like to stay away from a noisy generator. I plan to install externally regulated, alternators, and a lithium battery bank with solar panels on the roof.  I was thinking of adding a secondary generator on each engine controlled by a wakespeed WS 500 speed and a victron energy installation similar as seen in this example.
https://www.victronenergy.de/upload/documents/Manual-&-Drawing-Catamaran-setup-Quattro-5kVA-230VAC-24V-Extra-Alternators-&-WS500.pdf

Due to the high Ampere loads it would be useful to go to 24V system, however the Excess 14 is designed for 12V (garmin, auotopilot?, lights, winch etc.). I saw that the fridges can be run on 24V. My question is which of the devices in the Excess 14 can take 24 V and which necessarily need 12 V? I am interested in what solutions owners have found. Is there enough space between the engines and the hull so a secondary generator using a belt kit will fit on the Yanmar 4JH57?

Excess offers a lithium battery bank, however it is small and certainly needs a more complex changing system to protect the alternator and to allow fast charging of the batteries. I guess many people have the same issues specially when installing air conditioning, water makers and other devices.

Timmi.

Hi Timmi,
What is the decision you have taken. I believe you were on the right path, but I am interested to hear how you ended up and maybe you have gained more experience about this topic.

Cher Timmi
J'ai dû demander à mes collègues du bureau d'études, vos questions dépassent mes connaissances en électricité... !

Cordialement,
Hervé Piveteau

Dear Timmi
I had to ask my colleagues of the design office, your questions go beyond my electrical knowledge…!
Their answer is the following :
Most of the equipment on-board the Excess 14 in only 12Vcompatible.
If you plan to add extra generators on the engines, our advice is to stick with 12V, in order to sum the power of the originals alternators and the extra ones.
The Victron quattro converters go up to 5KVA in 12v, and can be set in parallel.
This is the type of modification that can easily be made post-delivery by our partners Robin Marine, based in Les Sables d’Olonne, they are very familiar with our models and can adapt the installation to better suit your requests.
Of course you can also ask your dealer for advice, they may propose a more local solution if you prefer.
I hope this (at least partly) answers your doubts,

Best regards,
Hervé Piveteau
