I AM THE NEW EXCESS!

I AM THE NEW EXCESS!

Imagine a catamaran somewhere between the Excess 11 and the Excess 14, a model that perfectly embodies the bold, assertive spirit of the brand.

This challenge began with the selection of a new team of architectural and design visionaries: Lombard (MLYDG) for naval architecture and Jean Marc Piaton for interior design.

Our all-new model will perpetuate the identity of the range, created with VPLP design and Patrick Le Quément for the first generation of Excess catamarans. With the architectural expertise of Lombard (MLYDG), the Excess Design Team will continue to develop the innovative and dynamic second generation of Excess catamarans.

Naval architect Eric Levet’s mission is to reinforce the brand’s strengths by creating a catamaran that’s dynamic, balanced and robust, offering pure sensations while maintaining interior comfort. A skilful balance that has built the reputation of Excess. “From the shape of the hulls to the layout, everything about this new Excess is designed to offer you smooth sailing and well-being on board,” he confides.

Jean-Marc Piaton, a seasoned consultant and designer, has spent three decades working for brands, shaping their style and expressing their personality, from logos to interior layouts. Translating lightness, both real and perceived, while ensuring continuity with existing models was his primary mission.

Stay tuned, and in a few months, you’ll hear all about it.
But before that, let us know in the comments how you envisage the new Excess of 2024.

See you very soon (very, very soon for those of you coming to the Cannes boat show)!

Dear Herve, I'm sure the new Excess model will be compared by some of us to the Nautitech 44. So I thought I'd share my thoughts about the design decisions I like about the 44:

1. The forward facing nav station / desk area (some of us will work from the boat)
2. One head and shower per hull (less weight / maintenance, better use of space)
3. The head is in a separate compartment
3. The smart room concept (similar to the Excess 14)
3. All berths are extending from wall to wall (similar to the Excess 11)

I'm really looking forward to see the first drawings :)

Dear Herve, I really hope to see two main design improvements on the new boat: The first one would be a forward facing desk in the salon as I'm planning on working from the boat. The second one would be a coach roof that extends as far aft as possible, like on the Nautitech 40 or Seawind 1170. This is totally personal but I think a maximum amount of shaded area to protect against the sun is very important from a health perspective. The aft coach roof on the 11 I think is too short and doesn't extend far enough aft to fulfil the above requirement. In addition I'd be happy to keep the "one head and shower" concept in the non owners hull for system simplicity and weight saving reasons. I much prefer one larger head and shower over two separate ones that are too small. So please keep it simple and fast :) Thank you to the entire team for the great work!

Thanks a lot Markus for those interesting and realistic inputs, we'll consider if we can fully integrate some of them, or at least slightly move the pencil towards them !

Hopefully, a 44 feet cat (overall 46 with the longest bowsprit) with daggerboards and no plywood with a bit of more effort in lowering the displacement. Everything else of the 14 is OK. This would really differentiate yourself from the Lagoon

Thanks Gio ! Yes the trend will definitely be to go one step further into differentiating from Lagoon and other mainstream brands. The Excess DNA is now well set, and the objective is to strengthen our positionning, in between perf cats and full-comfort ones !

Merci beaucoup !

Really excited to hear that a between size is in the works!
I will say it even though I expect it is not in the simplicity (which is a good thing) that is Excess: daggerboards/centerboard option. :D

Dear One-pop, I frequently get this good question about daggerboards. I was fortunate enough to attend press trials, alongside performance-oriented boats (all equipped with daggerboards). Honestly, the Excess 14 showed really impressive upwind abilities and agility. I have the feeling that we have reached an excellent performance/complexity balance. Draft while anchoring is a drawback that can be discussed, but on the performance side I really wish everyone could experiment such side-by-side comparison with daggerboards cats. To be transparent, today’s plans of the next model take advantage of the convincing 14’ experience, and push the draft/length ratio a touch further…

Quelle belle nouvelle!
Alors, le cata de mes rêves:
Longueur 41 pieds!

Merci encore !
