FOR OR AGAINST AN OPENING COCKPIT ROOF
Today, we're opening up a topic that often fascinates architects… and sometimes divides sailors: an opening roof on the hardtop of your catamaran.
Does the idea appeal to you? Leave you uncertain?
Let's walk through it together before giving you the floor.
An opening roof: more light, more air, better visibility
Positioned on the hardtop, above the helm station or the outdoor area forward of the saloon, an opening roof brings several real advantages:
- A clear view of the sails: perfect for keeping an eye on the mainsail or adjusting trim without sacrificing comfort.
- Natural ventilation on board: at anchor, a light breeze flows through the cockpit, making the space more pleasant without air conditioning.
- An opening to the sky: stargazing at night, catching a moonrise, or simply airing out the boat gently.
- Adjustable privacy: roof open or closed, you choose the atmosphere. A real plus for those who love feeling the elements without giving up comfort.
But some are still hesitant Even if the idea is appealing, it also raises a few questions:
- Maintenance of mechanisms and seals.
- Heat management during the day, especially in the tropics.
- Structural integration in manoeuvring areas, depending on the size of the catamaran. In short, a choice that depends as much on your sailing style as on your life on board.
It's your call! As always in the Lab, your opinion really matters. Tell us:
- Yes, I want an opening roof on the hardtop: more air, more sensations, more freedom!
- No, I prefer a closed hardtop: simplicity, robustness, no extra mechanism.
- It depends, only on certain models or as an option depending on sailing programmes. Your feedback directly influences design choices on future Excess boats. Over to you — the Excess team can't wait to read your thoughts!
