EXCESS CATAMARAN SIGNATURE LIGHTING

EXCESS CATAMARAN SIGNATURE LIGHTING

Over recent years, auto manufacturers have redoubled their efforts to cultivate a lighting signature.

What do you think of doing the same for our catamarans, with the possibility of modulating the lighting?

I remember anchoring at Christmas off Sainte Anne, Martinique, when we ended up spending over a quarter of an hour in the dinghy looking for our boat!

With an original lighting signature, we wouldn’t have to worry about a thing, and it could be a differentiating asset for the Excess brand.

A simple solution would be to have the cabin and cockpit lighting dimmable and switchable between white or red light. Also to have the lights individually switchable so for example a single red light can be left on of say four lights in the cockpit or of the same in the cabin. We always leave a single red light on that’s over the helm on our boat in a busy anchorage. This lighting set up is functional as dim red is good at night and keeps it simple. Also light pollution is avoided. We are looking forward to our time on the excess 11 in Tahiti in May and starry nights. Roy & Vicki

Cedric...we have had the same experience at Sainte Anne ... except for us it was closer to one hour ! I completely share your point of view, yet you don t want it to be too strong because the beauty of being at anchor is to gaze at the stars without too much light polluting the sky. It creates a new challenge for Herve who was getting a bit bored :-)

Hi Cedric,

I can see the merit in making identification of your boat in a crowded anchorage easier with signature LED lighting. Also adding atmosphere and ambiance to outdoor entertaining of an evening.

But having see a few outrageous Super Yachts lighting up the sea floor in Greece with under hull lighting…. I think it would be a case of less is more ;-)

Keep it lean and understated please.

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks very much for your thoughts. Your question highlights something that everyone can relate to! Indeed, the quest for nocturnal lighting at anchor can sometimes be a real adventure!
So, we’ll take the opportunity to launch this subject here. What lighting signature would you like to see aboard our Excess catamarans? Where would you envisage it positioned on the boat? What have you got in mind?
